3D printed gun parts offer a unique opportunity for lovers of antique firearms and Curios and Relics. While some of these still have great parts availability, others can be a bit rarer, and thus pricier.

As a lover of older guns myself with a Walther KKW, SKS, and 1907 Remington Model 11, I’ve had to buy some replacement parts here and there.

Now, with Gunny McGunsmith, I’m hoping to use my 3D modelling/design skills and 3D printing to create replacement parts for far cheaper than other options out there.

Of course we can’t replace everything! But certainly we can help to keep many of these old guns, packed with history and character, able to fire.

First Project: Remington Model 11 3D Printed Gun Parts

Ultimately, I aspire to build a collection of free 3D object files for these older gun parts, and this will start with my Remington Model 11. In theory, these parts should also work for the Browning A5 and Savage model of same design.

I’ve actually, as of this writing already modeled my first parts, the action spring plug and pin for my Remington Model 11 shotgun (parts no. 11 and 12).

These parts are printed in PETG, one of my favorite plastics to use for it’s high strength and ease of printing. The original part here is actually wood, which as anyone who owns older guns will know, can be severely degraded by gun oil. Unfortunately, many of the action spring plugs become weak as they’ve been subjected to oil before.

The PETG used here should be a plenty strong replacement, at least for the spring plug, I have some doubts about the pin. But, theoretically, the plug could last longer seeing as it won’t weaken over time due to the gun oil.

What about parts that won’t work in plastic?

Obviously, you can’t 3D print everything within a gun. Things like the bolt carrier, firing pin, barrel, etc. need to be made of metal. But, 3D Printing still helps in some of these cases. We can test fit with 3D printed parts before using a CNC to create a metal version of the part for long term, safe usage.

Quick Conclusion:

  • 3D printing gun parts could result in some very cheap replacement parts, even for rare guns!
  • I plan to start releasing files for parts as I’ve tested them. This will start with guns in my personal collection , but I will quickly run out and need community sourced parts.
  • Files will be free. Additionally I’ll offer the option to buy parts printed by me if you don’t have a printer.
